AO3 MCP server
by ArturLys
Let your AI search Archive of Our Own and actually read full fanfics before recommending them.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Archive of Our Own, the big fanfiction site, so it can search for stories and read them for you. Instead of guessing from the short description on a story page, your AI sends the full text to a second, cheaper AI that reads it and reports back. It is handy if you read a lot of fanfic and want honest recommendations, or if you write and want to see how other authors handle a scene.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Archive of Our Own, so it can look up stories and read them when you ask. You install it once on your computer, and after that your AI just uses it quietly in the background.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like find me a long enemies-to-lovers story and tell me which is best written. Your AI uses this helper to search AO3 with your filters, like fandom, pairing, rating, word count, or completion status. Then it hands the shortlist to a second AI called Gemini, which reads the full stories and writes a short report on each one: plot, characters, writing style, a few real sentences from the text, and any content warnings. Your AI compares those reports and gives you a recommendation based on what was actually written, not on the author's blurb. Stories it has already downloaded are kept for a day, so asking a new question about the same story does not bother AO3 again.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search AO3 by fandom, pairing, character, tags, rating, word count, and sorting
- Turn vague wording like rivals to lovers into the exact AO3 tag
- Fetch the full details card for one story, including tags and stats
- Read up to 20 full stories in one go and get a report on each
- Get real sentences from the text so writing quality is judged from the prose
- Compare several stories and get a ranking against your question
- Pull style examples from well-loved stories while you are writing
Try asking your AI
- “Find me a completed enemies-to-lovers longfic in this fandom, read the top candidates, and tell me which is best written.”
- “Search for stories with over 50,000 words and more than 500 kudos, then read the first five and summarize the plots.”
- “Find three highly-kudosed fics where rivals are forced to share a bed, read them, and tell me how each one builds the tension.”
- “What tags does AO3 use for a slow burn with a fake relationship? Then find me the most popular one.”
What it gives back to you
You get back a short report for each story: plot, characters, writing style, a few real sentences from the text, content notes, and a ranking that compares them against your question. It also gives you the story's title, author, tags, and stats so you can find it on AO3. Everything shows up as normal text in your chat, like a friend summarizing what they read.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer installed on your computer
- A free Gemini API key from aistudio.google.com (a kind of password for apps; the site gives you one for free with any Google account)
Good to know
The full text of the stories you pick is sent to Google's Gemini service to be read, and AO3 carries stories at every rating, so use the rating filter if you want to keep things tame.
Install it with your AI
Add AO3 MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check AO3 MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Fanfiction readers who want honest recommendations, and fanfic or roleplay writers who want to study how other authors handle a scene.
