This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to AniList, the big online database for anime and manga. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI about a show, a character or a studio, and it will fetch the real details for you. It is handy for anyone who watches anime or reads manga and likes to look things up quickly.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to AniList, so it can search shows, characters and user lists for you when you ask. You do not need to understand how it works under the hood. You just ask a question, and the helper does the looking up.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about anime or manga, like a title, a character or a studio. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper talks to AniList over the internet and asks for the matching information. AniList sends back the details, and the helper hands them to your AI. Your AI then writes the answer out for you in the chat, in plain words.

What you can do with it

  • Search for anime or manga by title or keyword
  • Look up details about a specific anime, manga, character or staff member
  • Find out what a studio has made
  • Check a user's anime or manga list on AniList
  • See which characters or staff have a birthday today
  • Get recommendations related to a show or manga
  • Look up genres and tags used on AniList

Try asking your AI

  • “Can you search for anime similar to Bocchi the Rock!?”
  • “Tell me about the character Hitori Gotou using the AniList tools.”
  • “What anime has Studio Ghibli produced? List their most popular works.”
  • “Which anime characters have a birthday today?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers written out in the chat, like a short summary of a show, a list of titles, or details about a character or studio. If you ask about a user's list, it can show the titles and their status. Everything comes back as normal text you can read, not as files or code.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP servers
  • An AniList account and API token only if you want to use features that require login (optional)

Good to know

If you add your AniList token, it can change things on your AniList account, like your lists, favourites and posts, so keep the token private and only use it when you are comfortable with that.

Install it with your AI
