GIOŚ Air Quality MCP server

by bartosz-kuc

Ask your AI about air quality at Polish GIOŚ monitoring stations, by city or station.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to Poland's official air-quality monitoring network, run by GIOŚ. Once it is set up, you can just ask how the air is in your city and get real readings back. It is handy if you live in Poland and want to know whether it is a good day to open the window or go for a run outside.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to the GIOŚ air-quality data feed, so it can look up real stations and readings for you. You ask in plain words, and the helper fetches the data behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like how the air is in Kraków right now. The AI uses this helper to search the GIOŚ station list for that city and picks a station. Then it asks the helper for that station's air-quality index and the pollutant causing the problem. The helper talks to the official GIOŚ website and brings the answer back into your chat. You get a plain answer, with the category and the pollutant name, without visiting any website yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Look up air-quality stations by city or region
  • See which sensors are installed at a station
  • Get recent hourly readings from a chosen sensor
  • Check the overall air-quality index for a station
  • Find out which pollutant is the main problem right now
  • Compare air quality between two Polish cities

Try asking your AI

  • “How's the air in Kraków right now?”
  • “Show me the PM2.5 readings for the last 24 hours from station 400”
  • “Which stations are in Mazowieckie?”
  • “What's the air-quality index in Warsaw this afternoon?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat text: station names and IDs, a list of sensors, recent hourly numbers, or an index category with the critical pollutant. The category names come back in Polish, for example Bardzo dobry (very good) or Zły (poor), and the AI can explain what they mean. Some fields also keep their Polish labels, so the AI may translate them for you.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer installed on your computer
  • The Claude desktop app or Claude Code
  • The server files downloaded from GitHub and set up once

Good to know

It only reads public data and cannot change anything, but the readings are in Polish and refresh about once an hour, so they may not match the very latest moment.

Install it with your AI

Add GIOŚ Air Quality MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
