CCXT Crypto Exchange MCP server

by doggybee

Lets your AI check crypto prices, order books and balances, and place trades on many exchanges.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Compare the price of Bitcoin on Binance and Coinbase”, the CCXT Crypto Exchange MCP server reaches Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit and OKX, and you get back prices and answers in your chat.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, Coinbase and Kraken. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI for prices, charts data or your account balance, and it will go and fetch the answer. It is handy for anyone who follows crypto prices or trades and wants to skip opening exchange websites one by one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a connection to cryptocurrency exchanges through a tool called CCXT. When you ask about Bitcoin on Binance, your AI passes the question to this helper, the helper asks the exchange, and the answer comes back into your chat. So the AI stays the same, it just gains the ability to look things up and act on exchanges for you.

What this MCP server does

You type a question in plain words, like the price of Bitcoin on Binance. Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper talks to the exchange you named, using a shared library called CCXT that speaks to over 20 exchanges in the same way. The exchange sends back the data, and the helper hands it to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat. If you have added your exchange keys, it can also check your balance or place an order for you.

What you can do with it

  • Check the current price of any coin on a chosen exchange
  • Compare a coin's price across several exchanges
  • Look at the order book or recent trades for a trading pair
  • Pull candlestick (OHLCV) data for a period you choose
  • See your account balance on an exchange you connected
  • Place a market or limit order, and cancel orders
  • Check funding rates, leverage tiers and open positions on futures

Try asking your AI

  • “What is the current price of Bitcoin on Binance?”
  • “Show me the order book for ETH/USDT on Coinbase”
  • “Compare the price of SOL/USDT across different exchanges”
  • “What is my current balance on Binance?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers right in the chat: prices, lists of trades, order book rows, candlestick numbers, or your balance figures. When you place or cancel an order, it tells you what it did and the order details. Everything is shown as text you can read or copy, not as files.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • The Claude desktop app or another MCP-compatible AI client
  • For balance and trading: API keys from your exchange (a kind of password the exchange gives you)

Good to know

If you add API keys, this helper can place and cancel real trades and move funds, so use keys with limited permissions and never share them.
