Aegis MCP server

by getaegis

Let your AI call services like Slack or GitHub without ever seeing the real passwords or keys.

Aegis is a small helper that keeps your secret keys away from your AI. Your AI asks Aegis to make a call to a service like Slack or GitHub, and Aegis adds the real key behind the scenes. It is handy for anyone who wants their AI to do real work without handing it the keys to everything.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to Aegis, which holds your secret keys in a locked vault. When your AI needs to reach Slack or GitHub, it asks Aegis, and Aegis quietly adds the key for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to do something, like check a Slack channel or look up a GitHub issue. Your AI uses this helper, Aegis, instead of holding the key itself. Aegis checks that the request is going to a website you allowed, adds the real key, and sends it on. You get the answer back in your chat, and Aegis writes down what happened. Your AI never sees or stores the actual key.

What you can do with it

  • Call services like Slack or GitHub through your AI without giving it the real key
  • Limit each key to only the websites you choose
  • See a list of which services are available (names only, never the secrets)
  • Check that Aegis is running and healthy
  • Keep a record of every request, including ones that were blocked
  • Give each AI agent its own token and its own set of allowed keys

Try asking your AI

  • “Use Aegis to check the Slack auth test for my slack-bot credential”
  • “List the services I have set up in Aegis”
  • “Ask Aegis to fetch the latest GitHub issue from my repo”
  • “Check if Aegis is healthy and running”

What it gives back to you

You get the answer from the service back in your chat, like a Slack reply or a GitHub issue. Aegis also tells you which service it used and whether the request was allowed or blocked. If something was blocked, you see that too, so you know why. Every request is written to a log you can look at later.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 20 or newer (a free program you install once)
  • A terminal or command line to run the setup commands
  • The secret keys for the services you want to protect, like a Slack token or GitHub key

Good to know

Aegis can make real calls to services like Slack or GitHub on your behalf, so anything your AI asks for will actually happen, and you should keep your Aegis vault password safe.
