SQLite Explorer MCP server

by hannesrudolph

Lets your AI safely read and explore a SQLite database file and answer questions about the data inside it.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to a SQLite database file on your computer. A SQLite database is a single file that holds tables of data, like a spreadsheet saved as one file. It is handy if you have such a file and want to ask questions about it in plain English instead of writing database queries yourself.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to a SQLite database file, so the AI can look inside that file and read the data for you. You just ask your question, and the AI uses this helper behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You point this helper at one SQLite database file on your computer. When you ask your AI something about that data, the AI sends a read-only request to this helper. The helper checks the request is safe, runs it against your database file, and sends the results back. Your AI then turns those results into a normal answer in the chat. It never changes or deletes anything in the file, it only reads.

What you can do with it

  • List all the tables in your SQLite database
  • Show the columns and types of any table
  • Run read-only queries and get the rows back
  • Answer questions about the data in plain English
  • Summarize or count rows in a table
  • Look up specific records you describe

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are in my database?”
  • “Show me the columns in the orders table.”
  • “How many customers signed up last month?”
  • “List the five most recent rows in the invoices table.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, written in normal sentences. Behind the scenes the helper returns lists of tables, table details like column names and types, and rows of data from your queries. Your AI turns those into a readable reply, sometimes as a small table or a short summary.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.6 or newer installed on your computer
  • A SQLite database file you want to explore
  • The full path to that file on your computer
  • The Claude desktop app or the Cline plugin in VSCode

Good to know

It can only read your database, not change it, but it will read whatever data is in the file you point it at, so only connect databases you are comfortable sharing with your AI.

Install it with your AI

Add SQLite Explorer MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SQLite Explorer MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
