by jj-cheng25

Let your AI read a WeChat article for you, including its pictures and video snapshots.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Summarize this WeChat article for me”, the WeChat Articles MCP server connects it to WeChat article, and you get back article text and pictures.

This is a small helper that lets your AI read WeChat Official Account articles. You paste a public article link, and your AI gets the text, the pictures, and a few still frames from any videos in the article. It is handy if you follow Chinese newsletters or want to summarize WeChat posts without reading every one yourself.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot open a WeChat article or look at what is inside it. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill. This one gives it the skill of reading WeChat articles, so when you paste a link, the AI can go fetch the article and show you what is in it.

What this MCP server does

You paste a WeChat article link into your chat. Your AI hands that link to this helper. The helper opens the public article page like a normal web browser would, then pulls out the title, the account name, the publish time, and the full body text. It also downloads the pictures inside the article and, for videos, grabs a handful of still frames so your AI can see roughly what the video shows. Then your AI gets all of that back and can summarize it, translate it, or answer your questions about it.

What you can do with it

  • Summarize a WeChat article in a few sentences
  • Translate a Chinese WeChat post into English
  • Describe the pictures inside an article
  • Tell you what a video in the article is about, using its still frames
  • Find the publish date and the account name for an article
  • Pull out the main points or a quote list from a long post
  • Compare two WeChat articles side by side

Try asking your AI

  • “Read this WeChat article and give me a short summary: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/cexkyzQBRDG3uIF6g5cEbQ”
  • “What is this WeChat post about, and who wrote it?”
  • “Translate the main points of this article into English”
  • “Look at the images and video frames in this article and tell me what is being shown”

What it gives back to you

You get back a mix of text and pictures in the chat. The text part has the article title, the account name, the publish time, and the full article body written out. The pictures from the article appear as images in the chat, and for each video you get a small set of still frames plus a short note about it. Your AI can then talk about any of it with you.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer (the README uses pip to install the helper)
  • The ffmpeg program if you want video still frames (a free tool you install once)
  • A link to a public WeChat article that starts with mp.weixin.qq.com/s/

Good to know

It only reads public article pages and does not log in or bypass any protections, but you should still respect WeChat's terms and the copyright of the article authors, and keep your use at normal reading pace rather than bulk scraping.
