mcpindex MCP server

by mcpindex-ai

Let your AI find other MCP servers by describing a task, and check trust notes before you connect.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Find me a server that can read PDFs”, the mcpindex MCP server connects it to mcpindex directory, and you get back top matches with install commands.

This is a helper that lets your AI look up other MCP servers for you. You describe what you want to do, and it comes back with a short list of servers that fit, plus how to add them. It is handy if you keep hearing about MCP servers and want an easier way to find the right one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This particular helper connects your AI to mcpindex.ai, a directory of MCP servers. So instead of you searching the web, your AI can look things up in that directory and bring answers back to your chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like find me a server that can read PDFs. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper asks the mcpindex directory, which searches its list of MCP servers. It comes back with the top matches, a short reason for each, and the exact command to install them. You then decide which one to try.

What you can do with it

  • Find MCP servers by describing a task in plain words
  • Search the directory by keyword or category
  • Get the exact install command for a server and your app
  • Compare two to five servers side by side
  • Ask for a trust note about a specific tool before you use it
  • Ask for a trust note about a whole server before you connect

Try asking your AI

  • “Find me an MCP server that can read PDFs and save the text to S3.”
  • “Search the directory for servers that work with Notion.”
  • “Give me the install command for the GitHub server in Claude Desktop.”
  • “Compare these two servers for me and tell me which looks better maintained.”

What it gives back to you

You get a short list of servers, usually the top three, each with a one-line reason and an install command. For trust checks, you get a simple verdict word like ALLOW, DENY, REVIEW, or UNVERIFIED, plus a few notes about what was checked. It all shows up as text in your chat, so you can read it and decide what to do next.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 20 or newer if you install it on your computer
  • An app that supports MCP servers, like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, or Cline
  • Nothing extra if you use the hosted version at mcpindex.ai/api/mcp

Good to know

The trust notes are advisory only, and at this version they usually come back as REVIEW or UNVERIFIED, which means a person should look before anything is used.
