Ledger MCP server

by minhyeoky

Ask your AI about your Ledger accounting file and get balances, transactions and reports in the chat.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How much did I spend on groceries last month?”, on your own computer the Ledger MCP server works with your Ledger file, and you get back your answer in the chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Ledger CLI, a free command line program for double entry bookkeeping. Once it is set up, you can ask plain questions about your own ledger file and the AI will look up the numbers for you. It is handy for anyone who already keeps their money records in a Ledger file and would rather ask questions than type commands.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to Ledger CLI and to your personal ledger file, so the AI can look up balances, transactions and reports there when you ask. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the looking up.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your money, like how much you spent on groceries last month. The AI sends that request to this helper, which turns it into the right Ledger CLI command. Ledger reads your ledger file and works out the answer. The helper sends the result back, and the AI shows it to you in the chat as a report or a list.

What you can do with it

  • Check the balance of any account or all accounts
  • List transactions with a certain shop or person
  • See spending in a date range, like a month or a year
  • List all accounts, payees or currencies in your file
  • Print transactions in ledger format
  • Get statistics about your ledger file
  • Compare your spending against a budget

Try asking your AI

  • “Show me my expenses for the last month”
  • “What is my current balance in all accounts?”
  • “List all transactions with Amazon”
  • “How much did I spend on groceries in 2023?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat as text: balance reports, lists of transactions, lists of accounts or payees, statistics and budget reports. The helper does not change your ledger file, it only reads it and reports back. You can ask follow up questions and it will look again.

Before you start

What you need

  • Ledger CLI installed on your computer and available in your PATH
  • A ledger file with your financial data
  • The path to that ledger file, set as the LEDGER_FILE setting or passed when the server starts
  • Docker if you use the Docker install, or uv if you use the uv install

Good to know

It reads your private financial data and can run raw Ledger commands, so only use it with clients you trust and be careful about which file paths you expose.

Install it with your AI
