Mac Monitor MCP server

by Pratyay

Ask your AI which apps are hogging your Mac's CPU, memory, or network, and get plain answers.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Why is my Mac so slow right now?”, on your own computer the Mac Monitor MCP server works with your Mac, and you get back plain answer in chat.

This is a small helper that lets your AI look at what is running on your Mac and tell you which apps are using the most power, memory, or internet. It is handy if your Mac feels slow and you want to know why, without opening Activity Monitor and guessing. It only works on macOS.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection. This one connects your AI to your Mac's own system information, so it can check which programs are busy and report back. You just ask in normal words, and the AI uses this helper behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like which app is slowing down your Mac. The AI sends that request to this helper program running on your Mac. The helper uses built-in macOS tools to take a quick snapshot of what is running right now. It looks at CPU, memory, and network connections. Then your AI reads that snapshot and explains it to you in plain language.

What you can do with it

  • Find the top 5 apps using the most CPU right now
  • See which apps are eating the most memory
  • Check which apps have the most network connections
  • Get a full system overview like Activity Monitor
  • Sort and page through all running processes by category
  • Spot likely bottlenecks and get simple suggestions

Try asking your AI

  • “Why is my Mac so slow right now?”
  • “Which apps are using the most memory?”
  • “Show me the top CPU processes on my machine”
  • “Give me a quick system overview of my Mac”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short, readable answer in the chat. That can be a list of the top apps with their CPU or memory percentages, or a summary of your overall system health. The AI may also point out what looks like the main problem and suggest what to close.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Mac (this only works on macOS)
  • Python 3.10 or newer
  • The uv tool installed (a small helper for running Python programs)
  • An AI app that supports MCP, like the Claude desktop app

Good to know

It only reads information about your running apps, it does not close or change anything, but the details it sees are private to your Mac.
