CoinCap MCP server

by QuantGeekDev

Lets your AI look up live cryptocurrency prices and market info from CoinCap.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is the price of bitcoin right now?”, the CoinCap MCP server connects it to CoinCap, and you get back A short answer in your chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to CoinCap, a public website that tracks cryptocurrency prices. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI things like the price of bitcoin and it will go and check for you. It is handy for anyone who follows crypto prices but does not want to open a dozen tabs.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to CoinCap, a public crypto price site. So when you ask about a coin, your AI can actually go and look it up instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about cryptocurrency, like the price of bitcoin or the market cap of ethereum. Your AI passes that request to this helper program running quietly on your computer. The helper then asks CoinCap's public website for the current numbers. CoinCap sends the data back, and your AI turns it into a normal sentence in your chat. You never have to visit the website or copy numbers yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Check the current price of bitcoin
  • Look up the price of almost any cryptocurrency CoinCap tracks
  • See the market cap of a coin like ethereum
  • Browse the list of crypto assets CoinCap covers
  • Ask follow-up questions about a coin you just looked up

Try asking your AI

  • “What is the price of bitcoin right now?”
  • “What is the market cap of ethereum?”
  • “What crypto assets are available on CoinCap?”
  • “How much is solana worth today?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short answer in your chat, usually a price in US dollars or a market cap figure. If you ask for the list of assets, you get a list of coin names. Everything comes back as normal text you can read and copy. It does not change anything on your computer or on CoinCap.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app (or another AI app that supports MCP servers)
  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • npx, which comes with Node.js

Good to know

Prices come from CoinCap's public data and can be a few moments behind, so do not treat them as live trading prices.
