MySQL Legacy MCP server

by Rufflet

Lets your AI look inside old MySQL 5.0 to 5.6 databases and run safe read queries for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What tables are in the legacy_app database?”, on your own computer the MySQL Legacy MCP server works with mySQL database, and you get back answer in chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to an old MySQL database, the kind still running on version 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 or 5.6. It is handy if you work with a legacy system and want to ask questions about the tables and data in plain English instead of writing SQL yourself. By default it only reads; anything that changes data has to be switched on deliberately.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to a MySQL database, so it can look up tables, columns and rows for you when you ask. You install it once on your own computer, and from then on your AI can reach that database through it.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like which tables exist in the database, or how many orders were placed last month. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper talks to your MySQL server using old-style SQL that works on versions 5.0 through 5.6, runs the query, and sends the result back. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat as a table or a short summary. If you have turned on the write tools, it can also make changes for you, but only when you ask.

What you can do with it

  • List all databases on the server
  • List the tables and views in a database
  • Show the columns of a table and what type each one is
  • Show the CREATE TABLE statement for a table
  • List the indexes on a table
  • Run a SELECT query and get the rows back
  • Check which MySQL version the server is running

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are in the legacy_app database?”
  • “Show me the columns of the customers table and what type each one is”
  • “How many orders were placed in March 2019?”
  • “What indexes exist on the orders table?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, usually as a small table of rows or a short summary. For schema questions it shows lists of names, column details, or the CREATE TABLE text. For SELECT queries it shows the rows that matched, up to a size limit. If you use a write tool, it tells you whether the change went through.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18.14.1 or newer and npm installed on your computer
  • The address, username, password and database name of your MySQL server
  • A dedicated MySQL account with only the read and metadata permissions you need

Good to know

The write tools can change or delete data and table structures, so keep them switched off unless you really need them, and use a MySQL account with only the permissions you actually need.

Install it with your AI

Add MySQL Legacy MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check MySQL Legacy MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
