Bling Bag is a small helper that gives your AI assistant an identity. You can write that identity yourself in a simple text file, or roll a random one and see what you get. It is handy if you want your AI to feel like a character instead of a blank chatbot.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. This one connects your AI to a little identity file called bling.json, so it can read your bot's name, personality and colours, or roll a brand new character for you. You just ask in plain words, and the helper does the rest.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to show your bot's identity, and it uses this helper to read your bling.json file. The helper hands back the name, personality, appearance and colour theme. You can also ask it to roll a random office-worker character, and it picks traits from big lists, scores how rare the result is, and wraps it in a fun share card. If you like the roll, you can ask it to save that character as your new identity, and it makes a backup of your old file first.

What you can do with it

  • Show your bot's current name, personality and colours
  • Get your bot's colour theme formatted for terminal, web, Slack, Discord or an IDE
  • Roll a random office-worker character with a rarity score and tier
  • Roll a historical figure in an absurd corporate job instead
  • Get the share card text for your most recent roll
  • Save a rolled character as your new identity file

What it gives back to you

You get back a short block of text in the chat. For an identity, that is the name, personality, appearance and colour codes. For a roll, it is a framed share card with the character's details, a rarity number and a tier like Middle Manager. The helper also sends the same information in a structured form your AI can read.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 20 or later
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex or Cursor
  • A bling.json file with your bot's name, personality and theme (or you can roll one and save it)

Good to know

Saving a roll overwrites your bling.json file, so keep the backup it creates if you want your old identity back.
