79% of UAE CEOs Say Their Jobs Are at Risk Without AI Results

Nearly four in five CEOs in the UAE believe they could lose their positions if their organizations fail to deliver measurable returns from AI investments by the end of 2026, according to research from Dataiku and Harris Poll covering 900 global executives.

The study reveals that AI has shifted from a technical modernization project to a core measure of executive credibility. Boards are increasingly treating AI strategy as a CEO-level responsibility rather than delegating it to technology leaders.

Boards Are Redefining What CEO Competence Means

More than half of UAE CEOs surveyed said successful AI leadership will soon become a primary criterion for board selection of future executives. The finding reflects a broader recalibration of how boards evaluate leadership capability.

Three-quarters of UAE CEOs reported becoming more directly involved in AI decisions over the past year. Fifty-five percent identified themselves as the most influential stakeholder in determining AI strategy, ahead of technology and data leaders.

The Stakes Are Personal

Nearly one-quarter of UAE CEOs - the highest proportion globally - said their organizations' AI decisions today could damage their long-term legacy. That figure is more than double the global average.

The pressure comes from multiple directions. Nearly six in ten UAE CEOs face board-level pressure to produce measurable AI outcomes. Seventy-six percent said investors now closely evaluate AI strategy and execution.

Three-quarters believe CEOs could lose their jobs because of a failed AI initiative or a high-profile AI-related crisis.

Implementation Remains Hesitant

Despite the pressure, forty-four percent of UAE CEOs said their companies have delayed or canceled AI initiatives due to concerns about failure. This tension - between accelerating adoption and managing risk - sits at the heart of current corporate AI strategy.

Governance Confidence Masks Real Gaps

Seventy-three percent of UAE CEOs expressed confidence in their organizations' governance frameworks. Yet the UAE ranked lowest globally in executives' confidence in explaining AI-driven decisions to regulators or courts.

Forty-one percent admitted they had not challenged AI vendor or platform decisions made within their organizations during the past year. The disconnect suggests executives feel assured about governance structures while remaining uncertain about their ability to fully interrogate the systems underpinning them.

More than four in ten UAE CEOs said their organizations would face significant exposure if the AI market contracted sharply or the "AI bubble" burst.

What This Means for Your Organization

The research points to a fundamental shift in how boards evaluate CEO performance. AI governance is no longer a compliance exercise - it has become a core leadership capability.

For executives, the challenge is demonstrating sufficient control, accountability, and measurable value to justify the scale of AI investments. That requires moving beyond confidence in strategy to confidence in execution and oversight.

If your board is applying this pressure, or you're concerned about your organization's AI governance posture, consider building your own capabilities in this area. AI Learning Path for CEOs addresses the specific concerns this research highlights - from strategy to board-level accountability.
