Five Health Systems Test AI Tools for Clinical Diagnosis
The Augmented Intelligence in Medicine and Health Care Initiative (AIM-HI) Coordinating Center hosted a virtual showcase on April 29 presenting results from five grant-funded projects that are evaluating how AI and machine learning algorithms can improve diagnostic decision-making in clinical settings.
The five projects span different clinical areas and patient populations. Researchers at San Ysidro Health are testing AI for diabetic retinopathy screening at the point of care. Parkland Community Health Plan is working to adapt a pediatric asthma algorithm for safety-net health settings. Emory University is studying AI-guided fluid resuscitation decisions in sepsis patients. Cedars-Sinai and Kaiser Permanente are developing methods to identify cardiac amyloidosis across diverse populations. Vanderbilt University Medical Center is examining how to implement AI tools while maintaining safety oversight.
Session recordings are available for each project, along with an introduction from Maria Ansari, MD, CEO of The Permanente Medical Group, and closing remarks from Vincent Liu, MD, MSc, also of TPMG, and Tommy Wang, PhD, of Sutter Health.
The projects represent work in progress rather than final results, offering health systems insight into how institutions are approaching AI implementation in real-world settings.
