Rural Hospital CIO: AI Must Deliver Measurable Results, Not Just Features

William Young, chief information officer at Berkshire Health Systems, has a straightforward test for artificial intelligence in healthcare: Does it save time? Does it cut waste? Does it help a rural hospital system survive?

Berkshire operates three hospitals, dozens of physician practices, a visiting nurse service and a cancer center partnership across western Massachusetts. The organization faces the same pressures as hospitals nationwide - rising costs, staffing shortages and clinicians stretched thin.

Accountability Over Innovation

Young said IT departments cannot simply add technology for its own sake. "I believe IT needs to help healthcare stay financially strong, and that health IT must be held accountable to measurable outcomes - not just new features," he said.

He sees AI as potentially one of the most important tools available to health systems. But only if it solves real problems. "As expenses go up, something substantial needs to change, and we can't rely on incremental optimization alone," Young said.

Berkshire is moving cautiously. The health system runs targeted pilot programs focused on reducing administrative work, improving workflows and helping staff work more efficiently. The organization measures everything before expanding - time savings, throughput, error reduction and user satisfaction.

Data and Change Management Matter Most

Behind the scenes, Berkshire invests heavily in data quality, analytics and governance so its systems can safely support AI tools. Leadership is also preparing employees for significant changes while keeping expectations realistic.

"Ultimately, executives should treat AI as both a technology program and a workforce transformation effort, because adoption and change management will determine the results," Young said.

The goal is not flashy innovation. Berkshire wants systems that reduce friction for clinicians, protect patients and help a rural health system remain financially stable in an increasingly difficult environment.

Healthcare leaders seeking guidance on AI strategy may find value in AI for Healthcare resources and an AI Learning Path for CIOs.
