Birmingham Schools Hold Districtwide AI Training for Hundreds of Teachers
Birmingham City Schools will bring hundreds of educators together on Monday, June 8, for professional development focused on using artificial intelligence safely and effectively in classrooms. The event, titled "Nurture. Guide. Empower.," aims to prepare teachers to integrate AI while protecting student privacy and maintaining academic integrity.
The keynote speaker is Richard Culatta, CEO of ISTE+ASCD, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at A.H. Parker High School. The district partnered with ISTE+ASCD and EdFarm, a Birmingham-based education organization, to design the professional learning sessions.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan said the training reflects a shift in what teachers encounter daily. "Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept; it is becoming part of the tools our educators and students encounter every day," Sullivan said. "Our responsibility is to ensure teachers understand how to use AI in ways that strengthen instruction, protect student privacy, maintain academic integrity and preserve the human relationships that remain essential to teaching and learning."
What Teachers Will Learn
Sessions will cover practical applications tailored to different grade levels, from early learning through high school. Teachers will explore how AI can support lesson planning, differentiated instruction, student engagement, and critical thinking.
Specific topics include:
- AI prompting techniques
- MagicSchool AI tools
- Virtual reality and interactive learning
- Learning management systems
- AI policy and cybersecurity
- Responsible technology integration
Educators will receive classroom-ready resources: sample AI prompts, age-appropriate activities, lesson design guidance, and strategies for helping students evaluate AI-generated content. Sessions will also address safeguards to ensure AI supports teaching rather than replacing educator judgment or student thinking.
For educators looking to deepen their AI skills beyond this professional development day, resources like the AI Learning Path for Teachers offer structured guidance on classroom implementation.
District Strategy
The training aligns with Birmingham City Schools' strategic plan, "Success Starts Here," which prioritizes innovation and educator preparation. By investing in teacher development and partnering with national leaders in educational technology, the district is positioning educators to guide students in using technology as a tool for learning and problem-solving.
