FCT UBEB Empowers Education Managers and Teachers with Strategic Leadership and AI Training in Abuja

FCT UBEB Wraps Up Training Programme for Education Managers

The Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB), working alongside the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), recently completed a focused training programme for education managers in Abuja.

This initiative concentrated on strategic leadership, social and emotional learning, and practical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. While this leadership training concluded, other school-based teacher trainings continue across Local Education Authorities within the FCT.

Leadership and Professional Development Focus

The five-day Leadership and Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme took place at Junior Secondary School, Area 11, Abuja. It gathered FCT UBEB management, unit heads, and key education stakeholders for an intensive session on strategic planning, accountability, and inclusive leadership.

Experts from the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) facilitated the training, emphasizing visionary leadership and the transformation of education management systems.

Mrs. Jacqueline Amasike, Director of Teacher Professional Development, opened the programme calling for adaptive leadership that motivates teachers and supports learner success. Participants worked with practical tools such as departmental SWOT analysis, policy-aligned planning, and inclusive education strategies aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).

Key sessions included strategic management led by Dr. Grace Omiyale, focused on data-driven planning, and inclusive education discussions by Miss Ijeoma Aghadiuno, who highlighted assistive technologies to support learners with disabilities and marginalized groups.

Keynote Highlights and Stakeholder Commitment

Dr. Alhassan Sule, Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, described the training as pivotal for education management. He challenged participants to embody the excellence needed to improve the system.

UBEC’s FCT Zonal Director, Mr. Udo Akpanossan Essien, reinforced the Commission’s commitment to supporting teacher professional growth and fostering professional learning communities.

Artificial Intelligence Training for Educators

Following the leadership sessions, FCT UBEB’s Teacher Professional Development Department partnered again with UBEC to conduct a five-day AI training workshop at the Education Resource Centre, Wuse Zone 7.

Led by AI specialist Mr. Nwachukwu Ugochukwu from Global Academic Competition and EPSEC, the workshop introduced educators to the essentials of AI with a focus on inclusion, ethics, and practical classroom application.

Teachers gained hands-on experience with platforms such as ChatGPT, Canva, IXL, Curipod, and Projidy to co-create lessons, design interactive content, and personalize instruction—even in schools with limited resources.

Mr. Ugochukwu emphasized, “AI should not replace teachers but empower them.” He noted how AI tools can help close learning gaps, especially for students with special needs. However, challenges like unreliable internet and rising transportation costs were recognized as obstacles to wider AI use.

Outcomes and Future Directions

The training wrapped up with team presentations showcasing creative AI integration and an evaluation confirming the programme’s success. Participants left with renewed confidence and a clear sense of purpose.

Mr. Akpanossan summarized, “These back-to-back training sessions mark a clear step in bringing our education system in line with global best practices. The investment by FCT UBEB and UBEC must now translate into action, innovation, and collaboration.”
