Healthcare Degrees Offer Safest Career Path as AI Reshapes Job Market

Healthcare and engineering graduates face the strongest employment prospects in an AI-disrupted job market, while retail-related degrees are becoming increasingly risky, according to new research analyzing over 100 occupations across 24 degree areas.

Healthcare ranks first overall, with unemployment at just 1.2% and only 24% of tasks exposed to automation. The field is projected to add more than 37,000 new positions through 2034, driven by demand for nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and physical therapists.

Healthcare professionals also earn strong salaries, with average median wages reaching nearly $118,000 annually. The field's resilience stems from its human-intensive nature - you cannot automate a physical therapist working with patients or a nurse providing direct care.

Other Strong Performers

Computer science and information technology ranks second, with the fastest projected growth at 9.7% and more than 47,000 new jobs expected. However, automation risk in tech fields reaches 53%, significantly higher than healthcare.

Business and management degrees also perform well, with projections for over 60,000 new management roles and average salaries exceeding $123,000 annually. Leadership and decision-making roles continue to resist full automation.

Engineering rounds out the top performers, with 8% projected growth, low automation exposure at 28%, and median salaries exceeding $110,000 annually.

Retail Sector Faces Steep Decline

Retail-related degrees emerged as the weakest category. The sector is projected to lose approximately 162,000 jobs by 2034, with automation potentially replacing up to 80% of current retail tasks.

Young workers are already feeling the pressure. Workers aged 22 to 25 experienced a 16% decline in employment across AI-exposed roles over the past three years, suggesting recent graduates may be among the most vulnerable groups as organizations accelerate automation.

For healthcare professionals, the data reinforces what many already know: the field remains one of the most secure career paths in an era of rapid technological change. Learn more about AI for Healthcare and how the industry is adapting to new tools.
