IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury sign AI-focused academic and research partnership

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the State University of New York at Old Westbury signed a letter of intent on Friday, June 28, to build joint academic programmes and research initiatives centred on artificial intelligence. The agreement will bring an IIT Bombay presence to the SUNY Old Westbury campus on Long Island, New York, widening US-India academic cooperation in science and engineering.

IIT Bombay director Prof Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury president Dr Timothy E. Sams signed the pact in Mumbai, with Consul General Binaya S. Pradhan present.

Leadership perspectives

Prof Kedare said, "IIT Bombay is excited to work with SUNY Old Westbury, whose leadership is committed to quality education and is forward looking in its outlook. Considering that our strengths are complementary, we believe that our partnership has the ability to scale great heights."

Dr Sams added, "IIT Bombay is recognised as a world-class institution. We are excited to establish a direct partnership that advances teaching, innovation and excellence in disciplines like physics and engineering with a goal of creating a robust IIT Bombay presence on our campus so that together we can prepare the next generation of leaders who will fuel success across our region, state, nation and world."

Early areas of cooperation

Initial activities will include faculty and researcher exchanges, joint research projects, and co-organised conferences or symposia. These efforts will run in parallel with the design of new degree programmes. The degree programmes will focus on artificial intelligence, meeting growing demand for specialised AI for Education.

The joint research activities will address problems in artificial intelligence, contributing directly to advances in AI for Science & Research.

Why this matters for science and research professionals

The partnership opens direct routes for cross-border collaboration on AI-driven scientific problems, from physics to engineering. Researchers can expect faculty exchange opportunities, joint grant proposals, and access to shared datasets and infrastructure. The Long Island location, near New York's financial and technology corridors, may also shorten the path from research to applied deployment.
