Long Island University Launches AI and Innovation Center

Long Island University announced the creation of the Artificial Intelligence and Academic Innovation (AI2) Center this week, consolidating the school's existing AI programs and research initiatives under one structure. The center will coordinate degree programs, research labs, and a university-wide credential that all students can pursue.

LIU already offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in AI. The new center expands on that foundation by scaling the Artificial Intelligence Competency Distinction - a nine-credit supplementary program available to all students across disciplines.

The credential covers three components: introduction to AI tools, ethical considerations including bias and privacy, and hands-on lab work. Students work with postdoctoral mentors and access LIU's research facilities to apply what they learn.

The university is backing the initiative with facility investments. A 40,000-square-foot science building broke ground recently at LIU's Post campus, where researchers will develop digital organ "twins" - computational replicas of human organs used to simulate surgeries and test drugs before clinical use.

At the Brooklyn campus, a lab built through a partnership with software company Dassault Systèmes supports 3D design, simulation, and fabrication work.

Kimberly Cline, LIU president, said the center "reflects our vision for the future of higher education, one that prepares students across every discipline to thrive in an AI-driven economy."

Mohammed Cherkaoui, senior vice president for research and AI, said the center positions LIU to prepare students with skills needed to lead in the field. "Artificial intelligence is not limited to one industry or one discipline," he said. "It is reshaping the future of how we live, work, research and innovate."
