Medline deploys AI robotics in distribution centers, first healthcare company to use Symbotic system

Medline announced a partnership with Symbotic to implement AI-powered warehouse automation across its U.S. distribution network. The healthcare supplier will pilot the technology in 2027 at one of its 45 distribution centers, making it the first healthcare company to deploy this system.

The Symbotic platform uses autonomous robots to handle picking, storage, and retrieval of items. The system depalletizes incoming shipments, stores products, and builds outbound pallets customized to each customer's layout and needs. Retailers and consumer goods companies already use the technology at scale.

Sean Halligan, Medline's chief supply chain officer, said the investment supports the company's goal to improve efficiency for customers while helping them manage operational, clinical, and financial performance.

Medline has already deployed other automation systems in its distribution centers, including goods-to-person robotic picking systems, automated packaging, and its Pick Pack Pro technology. The Symbotic partnership represents the next phase of modernizing fulfillment operations.

The healthcare sector faces pressure to move products faster and more accurately across supply chains serving hospitals, clinics, and other care settings. Automation can address labor constraints while reducing errors in order fulfillment.

Mike Dunn, chief customer officer at Symbotic, said the Medline agreement validates the system's ability to meet the speed, accuracy, and cost requirements of healthcare distribution.

For healthcare professionals managing supply chain operations, the deployment signals a shift toward AI for operations in medical supply distribution. As automation becomes standard, understanding how these systems integrate with existing workflows will matter for procurement, logistics, and inventory management roles.
