Meta Cuts 10% of Workforce as Tech Companies Restructure Around AI

Meta Platforms is laying off 8,000 employees - roughly 10 percent of its staff - and closing 6,000 open job listings as the company redirects resources toward artificial intelligence investments. The cuts will take effect next month, following an announcement Thursday by Meta's chief people officer Janelle Gale.

Gale said in a memo that the company wanted to communicate the decision quickly after it leaked internally. "I know this is unwelcome news and confirming this puts everyone in an uneasy state, but we feel this is the best path forward, given the circumstances," she wrote.

Meta joins a wave of tech layoffs tied to AI spending. Snap cut 1,000 employees last week citing its own AI integration efforts. Amazon eliminated roughly 16,000 jobs earlier this year to reduce bureaucracy. On the same day as Meta's announcement, Microsoft unveiled a voluntary buyout program for about 7 percent of its workforce.

The restructuring reflects how major tech companies are redirecting capital. Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Amazon are each investing billions in AI infrastructure, including data centers and computing power, to move faster and operate more efficiently.

The cuts underscore uncertainty about AI's economic impact. Beyond the high cost of compute resources, companies face questions about how AI adoption will affect overall employment levels across industries.

For HR professionals managing workforce changes, understanding AI's role in organizational restructuring is increasingly critical.
