Microsoft Report Highlights the Rise of 'Frontier Firms' in AI-Powered Workplaces

Microsoft’s latest Work Trend Index (WTI) report reveals a new type of business emerging as AI reshapes the workplace: the Frontier Firm. These organisations are leveraging AI to drive innovation and scale operations, going beyond just improving efficiency.

The report, based on data from over 31,000 professionals across 31 countries and trillions of signals from Microsoft 365 tools, shows how Frontier Firms use hybrid teams—where humans and AI work side by side—to meet increasing business demands despite limited human capacity.

Why Frontier Firms Matter for Customer Support and HR

For those in customer support and human resources, the rise of Frontier Firms signals a shift in how work gets done. AI tools are becoming part of daily workflows, assisting in areas like internal communications, customer service, and data analysis.

According to the report, 82% of business leaders plan to adopt AI solutions within the next 12 to 18 months. This means AI will become a core part of team operations, creating new roles such as AI trainers, data security specialists, and agent managers—positions that HR professionals will need to understand and recruit for.

New Roles and Skills in Demand

  • AI Trainers: Guiding AI systems to improve accuracy and effectiveness.
  • Data and Security Specialists: Ensuring data integrity and protecting sensitive information.
  • Agent Managers: Overseeing AI-human hybrid teams.
  • ROI Analysts and Strategists: Measuring AI impact across marketing, finance, and customer service.

Nearly 78% of global leaders are considering hiring for AI-specific roles, and this rises to 95% among Frontier Firms. Upskilling existing employees in AI literacy is also a priority, with 47% of leaders focusing on workforce development over the next year.

Changing Workplace Structures

The report highlights a move away from traditional hierarchies toward agile, AI-integrated workflows. Employees in Frontier Firms use AI tools more extensively in their daily tasks, leading to more fluid and outcome-driven work environments.

One emerging concept is the “agent boss”—professionals who manage AI tools as part of their core responsibilities. Leaders predict that within five years, managing AI agents will be a standard team function.

Bridging the AI Adoption Gap

Despite enthusiasm from leadership—67% of leaders are familiar with AI agents—only 40% of employees report the same level of familiarity. Similarly, while 79% of leaders believe AI will accelerate career growth, only 67% of employees agree. This gap highlights the need for focused AI training and skills development.

Ola Williams, Country Manager at Microsoft Nigeria, notes, “AI has fundamentally changed the equation. Intelligence is now abundant, affordable, and scalable.” The report’s findings urge businesses to rethink how they integrate AI to empower hybrid teams effectively.

AI Adoption in Nigeria

Nigeria ranks 7th in Africa on the 2024 Oxford Insights AI Readiness Index, with strong AI adoption in fintech, healthcare, and agriculture. Supported by government initiatives, AI startup investments in Lagos have grown by 43% since early 2023, underscoring the region’s growing AI ecosystem.

Next Steps for Customer Support and HR Professionals

To stay relevant, customer support and HR teams should focus on:

  • Developing AI literacy across teams.
  • Identifying and recruiting for new AI-related roles.
  • Implementing AI tools that improve workflow and customer interaction.
  • Encouraging upskilling programs aligned with AI capabilities.
