Nearly Half of Auto Insurance Policies Now Sold Online as AI Tools Reshape Shopping
Digital purchases now account for 48% of new auto insurance policies in the United States, up from 36% five years ago, according to the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study. The shift reflects a fundamental change in how consumers compare coverage and buy protection.
Shoppers are pulling more quotes than ever. The average customer gathered 3.5 quotes-the highest number in the study's 20-year history-with many finding rates independently rather than through brokers.
Active shopping dipped slightly to 53% from 57% year over year, though the figure remains elevated by historical standards. A separate LexisNexis Risk Solutions report confirmed the trend, with the annual shop rate hitting a record 47.3% in the first quarter of 2026.
AI Tools Shift Competitive Ground
AI for Insurance tools are changing which carriers win customers. Shoppers using Generative AI and LLM applications are more likely to switch insurers, according to J.D. Power research.
Competition now centers on how clearly insurers present themselves in digital and AI-driven channels. Many carriers are falling short.
Shoppers were nearly twice as likely to consider a purchase when comparison tools were offered-39% versus 21%. Yet only about a third of shoppers encountered tools comparing competing brands. Another 28% saw no comparison tools at all.
Price Remains the Gateway
Price controls entry into the purchase process. Among active auto shoppers, 45% also hold a homeowners policy, but only 20% received a homeowners quote while shopping for auto coverage.
An uncompetitive auto quote typically closes the door on bundling opportunities. This represents a missed chance for carriers to cross-sell additional policies.
Usage-based insurance-which sets rates on driving behavior and mileage through telematics-is used by 20% of customers overall. Adoption climbs to 30% among recent shoppers and 34% among those who switched carriers. About 44% of recent shoppers said usage-based options factored into their decision.
Embedded insurance sold through dealerships or manufacturers attracted interest from 36% of recent shoppers, with stronger appeal among younger buyers.
Regional and Carrier Performance Gaps
Shopping and switching rates vary significantly by region. Southern states including Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Texas show high activity. New England states such as New Hampshire and Vermont show stronger customer loyalty and lower premiums.
Among large carriers, Erie Insurance ranked highest in purchase experience for the third consecutive year, scoring 719 out of 1,000. Nationwide followed at 715, and Allstate came in at 685.
The J.D. Power study surveyed 12,437 customers who sought an auto quote between January 2025 and January 2026.
