Notre Dame Law School has become the first law school to partner with Harvey, a leading generative artificial intelligence platform created specifically for legal professionals. Harvey’s platform is already used by 70% of AmLaw 10 firms and nearly 50% of AmLaw 100 firms, making this collaboration a key step in preparing Notre Dame students for the future legal market.
The goal of this partnership is simple: equip students with the AI skills that law firms increasingly expect. By incorporating Harvey AI into the curriculum, Notre Dame is helping students gain practical experience with tools shaping legal practice today and in the near future.
G. Marcus Cole, Joseph A. Matson Dean and Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School, said, “Artificial Intelligence is here. It is increasingly sophisticated and will become integral to our work. Law firms and organizations will expect expertise in AI use, so we must prepare our students to use it effectively and ethically.”
Starting in Fall 2024, law librarians received access and training with the Harvey platform. Then in Spring 2025, students in two Advanced Legal Research courses—Law Practice Technology and Online Legal Research—gained hands-on experience with Harvey. This exposure helped deepen their skills in conducting legal research enhanced by AI.
Thomas Mills, associate dean and director of the Kresge Law Library, noted, “Faculty who teach legal research have a responsibility to prepare students for law practice with AI. Our work with Harvey AI is the first step in introducing students to AI in legal settings.”
Susan Azyndar, senior associate director of the Kresge Law Library, observed that students appreciated Harvey’s “structured and thorough” approach and its “flexible, conversational” interface. They found it effective in breaking down complex information, highlighting key points, and supporting detailed analysis.
With more than half of Notre Dame Law graduates accepting offers from top law firms each year, this partnership strengthens their readiness for a competitive market shaped by technology. It raises awareness about current AI applications in law firms and anticipates how such tools will evolve.
John Haddock, Chief Business Officer at Harvey, stated, “Law schools like Notre Dame shape the future of the legal industry. We’re excited to invest in their students as they stay at the forefront of legal innovation.”
The collaboration was first introduced during a panel discussion moderated by Dean G. Marcus Cole in Fall 2024.
