OpenAI establishes Singapore hub with S$300 million commitment
OpenAI announced a partnership with Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information on May 19, committing more than S$300 million to support the country's national AI strategy. The initiative, called OpenAI for Singapore, centers on deploying frontier AI systems, developing local talent, and expanding access across the economy.
The partnership establishes OpenAI's first Applied AI Lab outside the United States. OpenAI will create over 200 Singapore-based technical roles in the coming years, with Singapore becoming a global hub for Forward-Deployed Engineers - specialists who work directly with organizations to solve complex problems using frontier AI.
Three pillars: deployment, talent, access
The initiative targets three areas aligned with Singapore's AI Mission priorities. In deployment, the lab will focus on public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure. OpenAI plans to expand its office footprint as the Singapore-based team grows.
For talent development, OpenAI will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and GovTech on AI-enabled learning tools, including support for Mother Tongue language learning. The company will establish a Singapore chapter of the OpenAI Academy, run Codex for Teachers hackathons, and launch a Forward-Deployed Engineer training program. It will also participate in Singapore's National AI Impact Programme to build AI capabilities across the technology workforce.
On access, OpenAI plans accelerator programs for AI-native startups and workshops for micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses. The focus is practical adoption - helping founders build with AI and SMEs improve operations and customer service.
