Singapore secures major AI commitments from Google and OpenAI
OpenAI will invest 300 million Singapore dollars ($234 million) in the city-state and establish its first overseas AI laboratory there, the company announced Wednesday. Google expanded its existing AI partnership with Singapore but did not commit a specific investment amount.
The separate agreements position Singapore as a testing ground for AI deployment across government services, healthcare, education and business. Both companies are betting on the city-state's strategy to become a neutral hub for developing and deploying AI solutions across Asia.
OpenAI's commitment
The OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab will employ more than 200 people over the next few years. The lab is the first of its kind outside the United States.
OpenAI said the lab will focus on national priorities including education, public services, finance, healthcare and digital infrastructure. The company will also run a training program for mid-career engineers and co-develop AI startup accelerators with local partners.
This follows OpenAI's 2024 opening of a Singapore office to support customers and partners across the Asia-Pacific region.
Google's expansion
Google said it will train government researchers to use AI agents for scientific work and partner with Singapore's Ministry of Education to train educators. The company will also explore how AI can support doctors and patients through its "global AI co-clinician research initiative."
Google released a joint whitepaper with Singapore's government on safe deployment of AI agents. The company opened its Google DeepMind research laboratory in Singapore in November 2025.
Singapore's broader AI strategy
Both deals align with Singapore's national AI strategy, which commits more than 1 billion Singapore dollars to strengthen public AI research capabilities between 2025 and 2030.
Singapore has also attracted major commitments from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, in addition to generative AI and large language model developers.
The announcements came during Singapore's ATxSummit, a technology conference with a focus on AI deployment this year.
Adoption on the rise
Fifty-two percent of workers in Singapore now use AI in their jobs, according to Slack's Workforce Index. The figure reflects broader adoption across the city-state as companies integrate AI into daily operations.
