Viral Claims of AI Chatbot Hacks Are Mostly Fake-But the Vulnerability Is Real
Social media is flooded with videos and screenshots claiming users have tricked McDonald's AI customer service bot into writing Python code, debugging software, and abandoning its burger-focused purpose. The posts promise a free alternative to paid AI services like Claude. An internal investigation found no evidence the exploit occurred, and the circulating videos are believed to be fraudulent. McDonald's doesn't even have an AI customer assistant in its app.
This mirrors a nearly identical claim about Chipotle's customer service bot, Pepper, that went viral in March. Chipotle's communications manager said those posts were Photoshopped and that Pepper neither uses generative AI nor can write code.
But the technical vulnerability these memes describe is real and serious. It's called prompt injection.
How Prompt Injection Works
When companies deploy an AI model for customer service, they embed hidden system prompts-background instructions that define what the bot can and cannot do. A McDonald's bot might be instructed to only discuss menu items. A Chipotle bot might be limited to order questions.
Prompt injection happens when a user crafts specific input that overrides those hidden rules, stripping the bot of its corporate constraints and exposing the underlying general-purpose language model. Security researchers call this a "capability leak."
The reason it's so hard to prevent comes down to how large language models work. Unlike traditional software with fixed rules, generative AI interprets language dynamically and fluidly. This design makes it nearly impossible to anticipate every phrase a determined user might try.
