WGGB Pushes for AI Transparency in Parliament

On Wednesday 7 May 2025, WGGB Chair Emma Reeves, Treasurer Gail Renard, and Senior Organiser John Sailing stood alongside UK Music and other creative industry representatives opposite Parliament. Their goal was to back amendments to the Data (Use and Access) Bill, proposed by Victoria Collins MP and Alex Sobel MP, which demanded transparency around AI training and stronger protections for creators' rights.

This event was part of the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, highlighting growing concern about how AI is trained on creative works and the risks posed by large tech companies potentially exploiting creators' content without permission.

Amendments and Parliamentary Response

While the amendments introduced by Victoria Collins MP did not pass, and those from Alex Sobel MP were not selected for debate, the strong support for these issues is clear. Many MPs and creative organisations across the UK agree that creators deserve better protection from unauthorized use of their work by AI developers.

The Data Bill is set to enter the ‘ping-pong’ phase on Monday 12 May, where the House of Lords and House of Commons will negotiate the final wording. The House of Lords is expected to push again for enhanced AI transparency measures, following earlier efforts.

What This Means for Writers

If you create original content, these discussions have direct implications for your rights. Transparency in AI training means knowing how your work is being used. Protecting creators means ensuring fair treatment and compensation. Stay informed and involved — your voice matters.

Thanks to all WGGB members who have contacted their MPs and supported this campaign. Continued pressure is essential to secure protections that reflect the realities faced by writers and other creatives today.
