Regarding government’s role, Amzat stressed that transparency and accountability are crucial to counter misinformation. Governments should provide timely, accurate information and avoid propaganda tactics.

Ayode Longe, Deputy Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda (MRA), highlighted AI’s transformative potential in research, data analysis, and content creation. He mentioned examples like Italy’s Il Foglio newspaper, which uses AI chatbots to write editions, demonstrating AI’s expanding capabilities.

Yet, Longe emphasized ethical concerns such as AI “hallucinations” (generating false information), copyright issues, attribution questions, and the risk of deepfake content. Journalists must double-check AI outputs and maintain rigorous fact-checking standards.

He called for stakeholder-driven AI regulation involving governments, media, tech companies, academia, legal experts, and consumers to address all impacts fairly.

Longe sees AI as a tool for media sustainability by enabling faster, more efficient content production and reaching larger audiences. However, this may reduce some media jobs while enhancing news accuracy and audience trust.
