Stem Export and Naming Check Agent

A stem package that sums to the mix with correct format and names, ready to upload

Stem Export and Naming Check Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Stems often arrive misaligned, clipped, mislabeled or missing, and the next person loses a day finding out. This agent opens the exported stems and checks that they all start at the same point, share the project sample rate and bit depth, and follow the naming rules. It checks peak levels for clipping, then sums all stems and compares the sum to the reference mix. If the sum does not null against the mix, it traces which stem differs by muting each one in turn, flags it for re-export, and checks again. It also confirms that no expected stem is missing from the session list. The engineer approves the package before it is uploaded. Edge case: a stem with time-based effects can differ slightly, so a small tolerance is allowed.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

Read the steps as a list
  1. Stems exported
  2. Open each stem and read start point, length, sample rate and bit depth
  3. Check names against the naming rules and the session track list
  4. Check peak levels and clipping
  5. Sum all stems and null against the reference mix
  6. Does the sum null within the tolerance? If not: mute stems one by one to find the stem that differs, flag it for re-export. Back to step 4.
  7. Are all starts, formats and names correct after re-export?If not: list each remaining mismatch and send it back. Back to step 2.

How it decides

A stem set passes when starts align, formats match, peaks stay under the limit and the null test is below the tolerance.

  • Fail a stem if its start differs by more than one sample
  • Fail if any peak exceeds -1 dBFS unless the mix does too
  • Allow a null residual below -60 dB
  • Reject any file with the wrong sample rate or depth

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Null tolerance (default -60 dB)
  • Peak limit
  • Naming scheme
  • Required sample rate and bit depth

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Uploading the package to the client or next engineer
  • Re-exporting a stem

Hard limits

  • Never overwrites the engineer's session or original files
  • Never uploads on its own

It stops when

  • Done: all checks pass and the engineer approved
  • Stop: the reference mix is missing

An example run

What happensA 14-stem package for a film cue was checked. Stem 9, a reverb return, started 480 samples late, so the null test left a residual at -38 dB. The check failed. The agent muted stems one by one and found stem 9. The engineer re-exported it, and the second null measured -72 dB. Names and formats all passed, and the engineer approved the upload.
