Matter Controller MCP server

by 0x1abin

Let your AI find, add and control Matter smart home devices like lights and switches.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Turn on the kitchen light”, on your own computer the Matter Controller MCP server works with matter smart home devices, and you get back the light is now on.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Matter smart home devices, the newer kind of smart bulbs, plugs and sensors that work across brands. Once it is set up, you can just tell your AI to turn a light on, dim it, or change its color, and it does it for you. It is handy if you have Matter devices at home or in the office and want to control them by chatting instead of opening an app.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot touch anything outside the conversation. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something real, and here that something is your Matter smart home devices. So when you ask your AI to switch a lamp on, it passes the request to this helper, the helper talks to the device, and the result comes back to you in the chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like turn on the kitchen light. The AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper then talks to your Matter devices over your home network, finds the right one, and sends the command. When the device responds, the helper sends the answer back, and your AI tells you what happened. It can also add new devices to your setup and list the ones you already have.

What you can do with it

  • Turn Matter lights, switches and plugs on, off or toggle them
  • Dim a light to a brightness level you choose
  • Set warm or cool white on a light, or pick a color
  • Add a new Matter device to your setup using its pairing code
  • List all the Matter devices you have already added
  • Look up details about a device, like its type and features
  • Remove a device from your setup when you no longer want it

Try asking your AI

  • “Turn on the living room light”
  • “Dim the desk lamp to about half brightness”
  • “Set the bedroom light to a warm white”
  • “List all my Matter devices”

What it gives back to you

You get plain answers in the chat, like the light is now on or here are your five devices. When you ask for a list, it comes back as a simple list of device names and IDs. When you ask for device details, you get things like the device type, its features and its current state. If something fails, you get a short message explaining what went wrong.

Before you start

What you need
