GST e-invoice MCP server

by 411sst

Turn an Indian GST tax invoice into the government's INV-01 e-invoice JSON, with every value checked against the document.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Turn this invoice PDF into the government e-invoice file”, the GST e-invoice MCP server works in steps: reads the invoice, then checks every value, then builds the e-invoice file, and you get back your e-invoice file, ready to copy.

This is a small helper that reads an Indian GST tax invoice (a PDF, or a scan) and turns it into the INV-01 JSON payload the government's e-invoice system expects. It is made for accountants, tax consultants and finance staff who prepare e-invoices and would rather not retype numbers by hand. It also tells you plainly which fields it could not read, instead of quietly guessing.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service, and here it connects your AI to a GST invoice reader. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to parse an invoice file, and this helper does the reading, checking and formatting for you. You never touch the helper directly; you just talk to your AI as usual.

What this MCP server does

You give your AI the path to an invoice file. Your AI passes it to this helper, which reads the pages, pulls out the seller, buyer, invoice number, line items and tax amounts, and checks each value back against the text in the document. It then builds the INV-01 JSON payload and runs arithmetic and GSTIN checks on it. You get the payload back in the chat, along with a list of anything it could not confirm and a note of where each value came from.

What you can do with it

  • Convert a GST invoice PDF or scan into INV-01 JSON
  • Check whether a GSTIN is structurally valid and passes its checksum
  • Re-validate an INV-01 payload you already have
  • See which fields were read at low confidence on a scan
  • See which values were derived by rule rather than printed on the page
  • Get a clear list of mandatory fields it could not read

Try asking your AI

  • “Parse this invoice PDF and give me the INV-01 JSON: C:\invoices\INV-2026-0042.pdf”
  • “Check this GSTIN for me: 27AAPFU0939F1ZV”
  • “Validate this INV-01 payload I already have and tell me if the totals add up”
  • “Read this scanned invoice and tell me which fields you were unsure about”

What it gives back to you

You get the INV-01 JSON payload in the chat, ready to copy. Beside it you get a list of warnings naming any field it could not confirm, and a note for every field saying whether it was read directly, structured by the model, derived by rule, or assumed. If a mandatory field is missing, you get no payload at all, just the list of missing fields. Export, SEZ and foreign-currency invoices are refused with a message saying why.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.11 or newer
  • Tesseract OCR installed on your computer (free, used for scanned pages)
  • A Groq API key (a kind of password for the AI service that reads the line-item table; you get one free from Groq)
  • An MCP client such as the Claude desktop app

Good to know

It builds a submission-ready payload but does not file anything and does not issue an IRN, so you still submit it to the government portal yourself, and you should read the warnings before you do.

Install it with your AI
