Ceph AIops MCP server

by AIops-tools

Let your AI check and manage a Ceph storage cluster, explain health warnings in plain words, and make guarded changes.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to a Ceph storage cluster, the kind of system many companies use to store files and disk images across many machines. It is made for people who run or look after such a cluster and want to ask questions in plain English instead of typing long commands. It also keeps a record of every action, so nothing happens silently.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another system. This one connects your AI to a Ceph storage cluster through its built-in web dashboard, so the AI can look things up or make changes there when you ask. You install it once, tell it how to log in, and then you just talk to your AI as usual.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what is wrong with my storage cluster. The AI sends that question to this helper program. The helper logs in to your Ceph dashboard and fetches the information it needs. It then turns the answer into plain language, for example explaining that a disk is almost full and suggesting what to do next. For changes, it can carry them out, but risky ones need a dry run and a second confirmation first.

What you can do with it

  • Explain health warnings in plain words, with likely cause and next step
  • Show the status of disks, storage pools, and the overall cluster
  • List and inspect virtual disk images and file systems
  • Trigger a scrub (a background check) on your data
  • Adjust disk weights and recovery speed, with an undo option
  • Delete a disk, pool, or image only after a dry run and double confirmation
  • List and apply undo steps for changes that were made

Try asking your AI

  • “Why is my Ceph cluster showing a health warning?”
  • “Show me which disks are almost full, most full first.”
  • “List the storage pools and their current usage.”
  • “Slow down recovery for the next hour so my apps get more speed.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: short explanations of health warnings, tables or lists of disks, pools, and images, and numbers like usage and capacity. When it makes a change, it tells you what it did and records an undo step if one is possible. Every call is also written to a local audit log on your machine, so you can look back later.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Ceph cluster with the dashboard module turned on
  • A username and password for that dashboard
  • Python and the uv tool (or pipx) to install the package
  • A master password you choose, to unlock the stored dashboard password

Good to know

It can make real changes to your storage cluster, including deleting disks, pools, and images, so only connect it with an account whose permissions you trust and review destructive actions carefully.

Install it with your AI

Add Ceph AIops MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
