Central Bank Rates MCP server

by AllRates-Today

Lets your AI look up official exchange rates from central banks and tax authorities, like the ECB or HMRC.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is the ECB's official USD/EUR rate today?”, the Central Bank Rates MCP server connects it to Central bank rate tables, and you get back the rate, with its date.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to official exchange rates published by central banks and tax offices around the world. You ask a question in plain words, and your AI fetches the number from the right institution. It is handy if you deal with invoices, tax filings, audits or anything where you need the rate a government body actually published, not the live market rate.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you; it cannot go and look up a rate somewhere. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one connects your AI to AllRatesToday, which collects official exchange rates from central banks and tax authorities. Once it is set up, your AI can ask that service for a rate and bring the answer back into your chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what rate the ECB published today for USD to EUR. Your AI passes the question to this helper. The helper talks to the AllRatesToday service, which reads the published table from that institution. The answer comes back into your chat with the rate and the date the institution published it. If you ask for a weekend or holiday, the service rolls back to the rate that was legally in force and tells you which date applied.

What you can do with it

  • Look up the latest official rate a specific central bank published
  • Ask for the official rate on a specific past date, like an invoice date
  • Get a date-by-date history of one currency pair from one institution
  • Compare one currency pair across many central banks, with high, low and middle values
  • See which dates a bank actually published a rate, so you know what is available
  • List all the central banks and tax authorities the service covers

Try asking your AI

  • “What is the ECB's official USD/EUR rate today?”
  • “What HMRC rate should I use for this invoice dated 15 March?”
  • “Show me the Bank of Japan's official rate for every day of the first quarter.”
  • “Compare the official USD/LKR rate across every central bank that publishes one.”

What it gives back to you

You get the rate back as a number in your chat, together with the date the institution published it and which institution it came from. For comparisons you get a small table with each bank's rate plus the highest, lowest and middle values. For histories you get a list of dates and rates. If a pair is not published directly by a bank, the service may work it out from that same bank's own table and mark it as derived.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf or another app that supports MCP servers
  • Node.js installed on your computer if you run it locally with npx
  • A free AllRatesToday account and API key for anything beyond the latest published table (an API key is a kind of password for apps; the site gives you one for free)

Good to know

These are official published rates, not live market rates, so do not use them for price display or currency conversion where you need the current market number.
