by astandrik

Let your AI search a gallery of animated pet packs for Codex and hand you install links, badges and embed code.

Codex Pets is a public online gallery of animated companion packs (they call them pets) that work with Codex, the AI coding tool. This MCP server is a small connection that lets your AI search that gallery and pull out the details for you. It is handy if you use Codex and want to add a little animated character to your setup without hunting through the site yourself.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to the Codex Pets gallery, so the AI can look up pets, read their pages and give you the install details. You just ask in normal words, and the helper does the looking up.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like find me a pet for Codex. The AI sends that request to this helper, which talks to the Codex Pets website. The website sends back a list of approved pets that match, with their names and short descriptions. The AI then shows you the results in the chat and can fetch the install command, badge code or embed code for any pet you pick. Everything here is read-only, so it only looks things up and never changes anything on the site.

What you can do with it

  • Search the gallery for approved pets when you are not sure of a name
  • Look up one specific pet if you already know its slug
  • Get the install command for a pet so you can add it to Codex
  • Generate a README badge snippet for a pet
  • Generate an iframe embed snippet for a pet
  • Generate an animated GIF snippet for a pet
  • Learn how the public new-pet request workflow works

Try asking your AI

  • “Find me some animated pets for Codex that fit a space theme”
  • “Show me the details for the pet called orbit-otter”
  • “How do I install the orbit-otter pet in Codex?”
  • “Give me a badge I can put in my README for orbit-otter”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain lists and short cards: pet names, descriptions and links. If you ask for install steps, you get the exact command to run. If you ask for a badge, embed or GIF, you get a small piece of code you can copy. It all shows up right in the chat, ready to use.

Before you start

What you need

  • An AI tool that supports MCP servers, such as Codex or Claude
  • Nothing else for the hosted version, since the gallery is public and read-only

Good to know

This server is read-only, so it only looks things up and cannot change or delete anything on the gallery.
