Routed MCP server
by bshea-1
Lets your AI pick the right skill for a coding request using a fast local helper that costs no tokens.

Routed is a small helper program that runs on your own computer and helps your AI coding assistant choose the right skill for what you ask. Instead of guessing or sending your question off to a paid service, it looks through the skills you already have and picks the best match in a blink. It is handy if you use coding assistants like Claude Code, Cursor, or LM Studio and want them to be smarter about picking the right tool.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something useful. This one, Routed, connects your AI to a local library of coding skills that live on your machine. When you ask for something, your AI quietly asks Routed which skill fits best, and Routed answers right away without sending anything to the internet.
What this MCP server does
You type a request in your AI chat, like asking it to write a test or fix a bug. Your AI passes that request to Routed, which runs quietly on your computer. Routed compares your words against the skills you have installed using a mix of keyword matching and meaning matching. It picks the best skill or skills and hands them back to your AI. Your AI then uses that skill to do the work, and you see the result in the chat as usual.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Pick the right coding skill for a plain English request
- Match requests in many languages, including German, Spanish, French, and Japanese
- Handle requests that need more than one skill at once
- Say no when a request is not really about coding, so nothing gets triggered by mistake
- Run entirely on your own computer with no internet needed
- Work with many coding assistants like Claude Code, Cursor, LM Studio, and Cline
Try asking your AI
- “Route this: refactor the auth service and add unit tests”
- “Which skill should handle auditing accessibility and fixing memory leaks”
- “Find the best skill for building a neural network in pytorch”
- “Route this request: write a unit test for my authentication service using TDD”
What it gives back to you
You get back the name of the skill or skills that fit your request, along with a short explanation of why they were chosen. In your AI chat, this usually shows up as the assistant picking up the right skill and then doing the task. In the terminal, you can see a ranked list with scores if you ask for the explain option. Nothing is changed on your computer unless the chosen skill itself does something.
Before you start
What you need
- A coding assistant that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop, Cursor, LM Studio, or Cline
- Node.js installed if you want to run it with npx or npm
- Some skills already saved on your computer for it to find
Good to know
It only reads and matches skills on your computer, so it does not change or delete anything by itself, but the skill it picks will then do the actual work.
Install it with your AI
Add Routed MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Routed MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and technical folks who use AI coding assistants and want them to pick the right skill quickly without spending tokens or sending prompts to the cloud.
