Gin-MCP server

by ckanthony

Turns your existing Gin web API into tools your AI assistant can call.

Gin-MCP is a small add-on for people who build web apps with the Go programming language and the Gin framework. It takes the web addresses your app already responds to and makes them available to AI assistants like Claude Desktop or Cursor. If you write Go code and want your AI to be able to talk to your own app, this is for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to your own Gin web app, so when you ask a question, the AI can actually reach into your app and pull out real answers. You do not have to teach the AI how your app works; the helper figures that out for you.

What this MCP server does

You add a few lines of code to your Gin app, and Gin-MCP looks at all the web addresses your app already handles. It turns each one into a tool your AI can use. Later, when you ask your AI something, the AI picks the right tool, sends the request to your app, and brings the answer back to your chat. You do not have to write extra glue code or describe each address by hand.

What you can do with it

  • Expose your existing Gin routes to AI assistants without rewriting them
  • Let your AI look up data from your own API during a chat
  • Filter which routes the AI can see, using tags or operation names
  • Write short comments above your handlers so tools get friendlier descriptions
  • Forward the user's login token so the AI can reach protected routes
  • Run the MCP helper inside the same app or as a separate service

Try asking your AI

  • “Use the ping tool and tell me what it says”
  • “Call the users tool with id 42 and show me the result”
  • “List the products from my API with page 2 and limit 20”
  • “Create a new product called Notebook with price 4.99”

What it gives back to you

You get back whatever your own API returns, shown right in the chat. If your route sends a list, you see a list. If it sends a single record, you see that record. If it changes something, the AI tells you what it did.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Gin app written in Go
  • Go installed on your computer
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop or Cursor

Good to know

It exposes your API routes to the AI, so be careful not to expose routes that delete data or that only admins should use.

Install it with your AI

Add Gin-MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Gin-MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
