BigQuery MCP server
by ergut
Ask your AI questions in plain English and it reads your BigQuery data to answer them.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Google BigQuery, the place where lots of companies keep their big data tables. Once it is set up, you can just ask questions in normal words instead of writing database queries yourself. It is handy for anyone who needs numbers from BigQuery but does not want to learn SQL.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your Google BigQuery data, so when you ask a question the AI can go look things up there and bring the answer back to you. Think of it as a translator sitting between your AI and your database.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question in plain English, like what were our top customers last month. The AI turns that into a BigQuery query and sends it through this helper. The helper checks the query is read-only, runs it against your BigQuery project, and hands the results back. Your AI then explains the numbers to you in the chat. It can also show you what tables and views exist in your datasets so you know what is available.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your BigQuery data in plain English
- List the tables and views in your datasets
- Look at the structure of a table to see its columns
- Run read-only queries without writing SQL yourself
- Set a limit on how much data each query is allowed to scan
- Block certain sensitive columns from ever reaching the AI
Try asking your AI
- “What were our top 10 customers last month?”
- “Show me the tables in the sales dataset.”
- “What columns does the orders table have?”
- “How many new signups did we get each week this quarter?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain language, usually with the numbers you asked for. When you ask about tables or columns, it gives you a list. When you ask a data question, it gives you the result rows or a short summary. Everything shows up right in the chat, so you can keep asking follow-up questions.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 14 or higher on your computer
- A Google Cloud project with BigQuery turned on
- Google Cloud CLI installed, or a service account key file
- An MCP-compatible app like Claude Desktop or Claude Code
Good to know
It can only read your data, never change or delete it, but query results are sent to your AI provider, so use the field restrictions if your data is sensitive.
Install it with your AI
Add BigQuery MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check BigQuery MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who needs answers from BigQuery data but does not want to write SQL, especially analysts, managers, and support or ops people.
