Agent Stack Directory MCP server

by gmansystems

Lets your AI look up and compare tools for building AI agents, straight from an open directory.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to the Agent Stack Directory, an open list of tools people use to build AI agents. It is handy if you keep hearing names like E2B, Browserbase or Daytona and want a plain answer about what they are and how they differ. You do not need an account or a key.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one connects your AI to the Agent Stack Directory, a public list of tools for building AI agents. Once it is connected, you can just ask your AI about those tools and it will look them up for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question, like which code sandboxes are open source. Your AI passes that question to this helper. The helper reads the Agent Stack Directory dataset and finds the matching entries. It sends back a short readable answer, plus some structured details your AI can use. You see the result right in your chat, no browsing needed.

What you can do with it

  • Search the directory by keyword or by category
  • Look up a single tool and see its summary and official site
  • Check whether a tool is marked open source
  • Compare two to four tools side by side
  • See alternatives to a tool in the same category
  • List every category in the directory with tool counts

Try asking your AI

  • “Which sandboxes for running agent code are open source?”
  • “Compare E2B and Daytona.”
  • “What are the alternatives to Browserbase?”
  • “Show me the categories in the Agent Stack Directory.”

What it gives back to you

You get a short written answer in the chat, like a ranked list of matching tools or a small comparison table. Alongside that, the helper sends structured details your AI can read, such as names, categories, links and open-source flags. For a single tool you also get its summary, official site and nearby alternatives. Nothing is changed anywhere; it only reads.

Before you start

Good to know

It only reads the directory, so it cannot change or delete anything, but the entries are a public snapshot and may not always match the very latest details on a vendor's own site.

Install it with your AI

Add Agent Stack Directory MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
