IHMT Memory MCP server
by gonzaroman
Give your AI coding agent a long-term memory stored as plain local files, so it remembers decisions across sessions.
IHMT is a memory helper for your AI coding agent. Tell it something once, like a decision or a correction, and it remembers it in future sessions and in any project. It is handy if you use Claude Code, Codex or opencode and you are tired of repeating yourself.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you in the current session and forgets everything when you close it. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. This one connects your AI to a memory folder on your own computer, so it can look things up and save new facts there when you ask. Your AI talks to this helper, and the helper reads and writes plain text files on your disk.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question, and before answering it searches your memory folder for anything relevant. The helper walks a tree of small text files, from the top down to the leaf that fits, and returns only what the question needs. When you tell it something new that changes an old fact, it keeps the old one as history and marks it OUTDATED, so future searches answer with the current one first. If a question is ambiguous, it asks you for a clue instead of guessing. Everything stays on your computer as readable files you can copy or back up.
What you can do with it
- Remember decisions and their reasons across sessions
- Keep one shared memory for Claude Code, Codex and opencode
- Flag old facts as OUTDATED when you correct them
- Search your memory before answering a question
- Map a codebase with file sizes and method line ranges
- Find just the code symbol that answers your question
- Ask you for a clue when a name is ambiguous
Try asking your AI
- “Remember that we moved staging to PostgreSQL 17 last week”
- “What did we decide about how stock reservations work?”
- “Find the method that handles soft holds in InventoryService.java”
- “Where do I live now?”
What it gives back to you
You get short answers in the chat, usually 200 to 900 tokens, with the best matching memory and its date. If something changed, you also see an OUTDATED notice telling you what the old value was and when it was replaced. For code questions, it returns the file name, line range and the code itself. If nothing matches, it says NOT FOUND instead of making something up.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer
- git to download IHMT
- An AI agent that can run terminal commands, like Claude Code, Codex or opencode
- Internet during installation only
Good to know
It reads and writes files in your memory folder, so be careful if that folder contains private notes you would not want sent to your AI model as context.
Install it with your AI
Add IHMT Memory MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check IHMT Memory MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and technical teams who use AI coding agents daily and want them to remember project decisions without repeating context.
