Bicycle Routes Generator MCP server

by Marc-Armillas

Ask your AI to build real cycling routes and save them as GPX files with elevation.

This is a helper for your AI that creates bike routes for you. You describe where you want to start, how far you want to ride, and what kind of riding you like, and it builds a real route on actual trails and roads. It is handy for mountain bikers and road cyclists who want a quick loop or a point-to-point ride without planning it by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot look up trails or draw a route on a map. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. This one connects your AI to OpenStreetMap and a routing engine, so it can build real cycling routes for you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something like "make me a 25 km mountain bike loop from Casa de Campo in Madrid". Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper looks up the place on OpenStreetMap, then asks a routing engine called BRouter to build several candidate routes on real trails and roads. It picks the best one, checks things like climbing, surface type, traffic and steep sections, and saves the route as a GPX file with elevation. Then it sends the summary and any warnings back to your AI, which explains them to you in plain words.

What you can do with it

  • Create a loop of a target distance from any starting place
  • Build a point-to-point route between two places
  • Make a route that passes through places you choose, in order
  • Pick a riding style: dirt tracks, mixed, singletrack or road
  • Limit how much climbing you want
  • Save the route as a GPX file with elevation
  • List the routes you have saved so far

Try asking your AI

  • “Make me a 25 km mountain bike loop from Casa de Campo in Madrid on dirt tracks”
  • “Give me a 60 km road ride from Madrid with little traffic”
  • “Build a 30 km loop from Casa de Campo that passes through El Pardo and Aravaca”
  • “Give me another option with less climbing, at most 200 m”

What it gives back to you

You get a short summary in the chat: distance, total climbing, highest and lowest point, steepest grades, and the mix of paved road, dirt track and singletrack. You also get warnings about sections with motor traffic, steep descents, protected areas and places where bikes are not allowed. Finally you get the path to the GPX file saved on your computer, which you can open in a map app or upload to a cycling platform.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app, or Claude Code if you prefer the terminal
  • A contact email or website address (the OpenStreetMap lookup service asks for one)
  • A folder where the GPX files will be saved (it uses a temporary folder by default)

Good to know

Always check the route on a map before riding, because OpenStreetMap data can be incomplete or out of date, and the climbing numbers come from an elevation model that may differ from your bike computer by 10 to 20 percent.

Install it with your AI

Add Bicycle Routes Generator MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Bicycle Routes Generator MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
