dbt Docs MCP server

by mattijsdp

Ask your AI about your dbt models, columns and how data flows between them.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Which dbt models use the customer_id column?”, on your own computer the dbt Docs MCP server works with your dbt project, and you get back A clear answer in your chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your dbt project files. dbt is a tool many data teams use to build and document their data models. If you work with dbt and want to ask questions about your models in plain English, this is for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your dbt project files, so it can look up models, columns and how they relate to each other. You ask a question, and the AI uses this helper to find the answer in your dbt project.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your dbt project, like which models use a certain column. The AI sends that question to this helper program. The helper reads your dbt files, like the manifest and catalog, and looks through the models, sources and tests. It then sends back the details it found, and the AI explains them to you in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Find dbt models, sources or tests by name
  • Search for which models use a particular column
  • Search inside the SQL code of your models
  • See what a model depends on and what depends on it
  • Trace where a column comes from and where it goes
  • Look up the full details of any dbt node

Try asking your AI

  • “Which dbt models use the customer_id column?”
  • “Show me everything that depends on the orders model.”
  • “Where does the revenue column in the monthly_sales model come from?”
  • “Find any dbt model with 'payment' in its SQL code.”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists of model names, column names, or short explanations of how things connect. For lineage questions, it shows a chain of models or columns from start to end. Everything appears as normal text in your chat, so you can read it right away.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The uv tool installed (a way to run Python programs)
  • Your dbt project files, including manifest.json and catalog.json
  • The path to those files set in the settings

Good to know

This server only reads your dbt files; it does not change anything in your project or database.
