MongoDB Atlas MCP server

by montumodi

Lets your AI look up and manage your MongoDB Atlas projects, clusters, users, and backups for you.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to MongoDB Atlas, the cloud service where MongoDB databases live. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI plain questions about your Atlas setup and it will go and check for you. It is handy for anyone who looks after databases but does not want to click around the Atlas website all day.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your Atlas account or change anything there. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill: here, the skill of talking to MongoDB Atlas. Once it is connected, you can ask your AI about your clusters or users, and it will use this helper to fetch the answer or make the change for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your MongoDB Atlas account, like which clusters you have or who the database users are. The AI passes your request to this helper program. The helper talks to the MongoDB Atlas service using your API keys, the way a password works for apps. Atlas sends back the details, and the helper hands them to your AI. Your AI then explains the answer to you in the chat, or confirms the change it made.

What you can do with it

  • List all your clusters and see their details
  • Create, update, or delete database users
  • Check your project events and alerts
  • List and manage your cloud backup snapshots
  • Add or remove IP addresses from your access list
  • Create and manage Atlas Search indexes
  • Look up organizations, projects, and their teams

Try asking your AI

  • “List all my MongoDB Atlas clusters and tell me which ones are paused”
  • “Show me the database users in my project”
  • “What alerts are open on my project right now?”
  • “List the recent events for my project”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat: lists of clusters, users, alerts, or events, plus details like names, sizes, and statuses. When you ask it to change something, it tells you what it did, like confirming a new user was created. For log requests, it returns encoded data that needs decoding, so that one is more technical.

Before you start

What you need

  • A MongoDB Atlas account
  • An Atlas API public key and private key (you create these in Atlas under Organization Settings, Access Manager, API Keys)
  • Your Atlas project ID (found in your project settings)
  • Node.js installed on your computer to run the server

Good to know

This helper can also create, change, and delete real things in your Atlas account, like clusters, users, and backups, so be careful with what you ask it to do.

Install it with your AI

Add MongoDB Atlas MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
