Nhost MCP server

by nhost · official

Let your AI read your Nhost database schema, run approved queries, and help with settings and migrations.

Nhost is a service that gives you a database, login system, file storage, and a way to ask for data, all in one place. The Nhost MCP server comes bundled with the Nhost command line tool, and it lets your AI assistant work with your Nhost project. It is handy if you build or maintain an app on Nhost and want help without clicking through every screen yourself.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Nhost, so it can look at your project and do certain things there when you ask. You stay in control, because you decide which actions it is allowed to take.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your Nhost project, like what tables you have or how a piece of data is shaped. The AI passes that request to this helper program, which talks to your Nhost project. The helper reads your data structure, runs the queries you have allowed, or looks up the Nhost documentation. Then the AI shows you the answer in plain language, right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Read your database schema so you can see your tables and fields
  • Run the queries and changes you have explicitly allowed
  • Manage permissions for who can see or change data
  • Help create and apply database migrations
  • Update settings on your Nhost Cloud project
  • Search the Nhost documentation for answers

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables do I have in my Nhost database?”
  • “Show me the fields in the users table.”
  • “How do I set up a migration to add a new column?”
  • “Search the Nhost docs for how permissions work.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, like a list of tables, a description of your data, or an explanation from the docs. If the AI runs a query you allowed, you see the results as text or a small table. If it makes a change, like updating a setting or applying a migration, it tells you what it did.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Nhost command line tool installed
  • An Nhost project, either local or on Nhost Cloud
  • Docker if you want to run the local development environment

Good to know

It can run queries and make changes to your Nhost project, so only allow the actions you are comfortable with.

Install it with your AI

Add Nhost MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Nhost MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
