Trading MCP server

by netanelavr

Lets your AI research stocks: screen for patterns, check fundamentals, insider trades, options and Reddit buzz.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How does TSLA look right now?”, the Trading MCP server reaches Finviz, Barchart, Reddit and OpenAI, and you get back answer in your chat.

This is a small helper program that gives your AI a set of stock research skills. You ask a question about a company or a ticker, and your AI goes and pulls the numbers and chatter for you. It is handy for people who follow the markets and want quick answers without opening ten browser tabs.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to stock data sources like Finviz, Barchart, Reddit and OpenAI. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up and run analyses for you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like how a stock looks or which stocks match a pattern. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper then talks to the relevant source, for example Finviz for screening, Barchart for options, Reddit for community posts, or OpenAI for news and sentiment. It gathers the data, runs the analysis, and hands the result back to your AI. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Screen stocks by filters like size, profitability and chart patterns
  • Pull key fundamental numbers such as P/E, ROE and debt ratios
  • Compare valuations across several tickers side by side
  • Score a company's financial health from 0 to 100
  • Check recent insider buying and selling activity
  • Look at put/call ratios for options market sentiment
  • Find trending tickers on Reddit and read the mood around them
  • Get AI summaries of recent news and how it might affect the stock

Try asking your AI

  • “Screen for large US stocks in a downtrend channel”
  • “Compare the valuations of AAPL, MSFT and GOOGL”
  • “What is the financial health score for TSLA”
  • “Show me insider activity for NVDA over the last 90 days”
  • “What is Reddit saying about GME this week”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists, tables, scores and short written summaries, all shown right in your chat. For example, a screening request returns matching tickers with key metrics, and a health score request returns a number from 0 to 100 with the factors behind it. Sentiment and news requests return short AI-written notes with confidence scores. Nothing is changed anywhere; it only reads and reports.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js installed on your computer
  • An OpenAI API key (a kind of password for apps; you get one from your OpenAI account, and using it costs money)
  • Reddit API credentials: client ID, client secret, username and password (free to create at reddit.com/prefs/apps)
  • An MCP client such as Cursor or another editor that supports MCP

Good to know

It only reads public data and does not place trades, but the OpenAI features cost money per use, the data comes from third-party sites that can be wrong or out of date, and nothing here is financial advice.
