Opengist MCP server

by ni-c

Lets your AI read, search, create and update gists on your own Opengist pastebin.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your own Opengist instance. Opengist is a self-hosted pastebin, a place where you save snippets of text or code and share them with a link. If you already run Opengist and use an AI assistant, this lets the assistant work with your gists for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your Opengist instance, so the AI can look up your gists, search them, or create new ones when you ask. You set it up once, and after that you just talk to your AI like normal.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your gists, like "show me my recent ones" or "save this as a new gist". The AI uses this helper, which talks to your Opengist instance over its built-in API. Opengist sends back the gists, files, or confirmation. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat, in plain words. For anything that deletes or publishes, the helper asks you to confirm first.

What you can do with it

  • List your gists, another user's gists, or all public ones
  • Search gists by title, description, topics or owner
  • Read a gist's files and its commit history
  • Create a new gist from a list of files
  • Update a gist's title, description, visibility or files
  • Fork a gist or like one
  • Delete a gist or specific files (with your confirmation)

Try asking your AI

  • “List my ten most recent gists”
  • “Search my gists for anything about database backups”
  • “Create a private gist called meeting-notes.md with the text I just wrote”
  • “Show me the commit history for gist abc123”
  • “Delete the file old-draft.md from my gist abc123”

What it gives back to you

You get back lists of gists with their titles and visibility, file contents, commit histories, or a short confirmation that something was created, updated or deleted. Results are kept to a sensible size, and if something is too big the answer tells you how to fetch the rest. In the chat it looks like a normal reply from your AI, sometimes with a small structured block behind it that the app can use.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 22 or newer installed on your computer
  • A running Opengist instance with its REST API enabled
  • A Personal Access Token from your Opengist account (Settings, then Access Tokens)
  • An MCP-capable AI app like Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex

Good to know

It can permanently delete gists and files, and it can publish content that others may then see, so check the confirmation prompts before you approve them.

Install it with your AI

Add Opengist MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Opengist MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
