by paramount-engineering

Lets your AI control a Roku device: press buttons, launch channels, read logs, and run tests for you.

This is a helper for people who build or test apps for Roku devices. It connects your AI assistant to a real Roku on your network so the AI can press remote buttons, launch channels, and read the debug logs. It is part of a larger desktop app called Roku Dev Studio, which you install on your computer.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. This helper connects your AI to Roku Dev Studio, which in turn talks to a real Roku device. So when you ask your AI to press a button or check the logs, it can actually do that on the device for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like 'press the home button on my Roku' or 'launch my channel and show the last errors'. The AI sends that request to this MCP server. The server passes it to the Roku Dev Studio app, which talks to your Roku over your local network. The app sends back the result, and the AI shows it to you in the chat, like a list of log lines or a confirmation that the button was pressed.

What you can do with it

  • Press remote control buttons (home, back, arrows, play, etc.) on your Roku
  • Launch a channel or app on the device
  • Read the live debug console output from a running channel
  • Take a screenshot of what is on the TV screen
  • Install (sideload) a development version of your channel
  • Run a saved action script that chains several steps together
  • Inspect the app's SceneGraph nodes and call its own functions

Try asking your AI

  • “Press the home button on my Roku”
  • “Launch my dev channel and show me the last 20 lines of console output”
  • “Take a screenshot of the current screen”
  • “Sideload the zip at /Users/me/build/myapp.zip to the living room Roku”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: a short confirmation that a button was pressed, a list of log lines from the console, a screenshot image, or a summary of what the action script did. If something fails, the AI tells you what went wrong, like the device not being reachable. It also reports which device it talked to when you have more than one.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Roku Dev Studio desktop app installed and running on your computer
  • A Roku device in Developer Mode on the same network, with its developer password
  • Node.js 24.17 or newer if you are building the app from source

Good to know

This helper can change things on your Roku, like installing a channel or pressing buttons, so make sure you are pointed at the right device before you let the AI act.
