RepoMap MCP server

by pdavis68

Lets your AI build a ranked map of a code project so it can find the right files and functions faster.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Map this project and tell me which files matter most”, the RepoMap MCP server works in steps: reads your code files, then finds functions and classes, then ranks by importance, and you get back A ranked map of your project.

RepoMap is a small helper that makes a map of a code project. It shows which files and functions matter most, so your AI can stop guessing and look at the right place. It is handy for anyone who asks an AI to read, explain, or change code in a project with many files.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to a code project on your computer. When you ask about the project, the AI uses this helper to look at the files and come back with a useful map instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about a code project. The AI calls this helper and tells it where the project lives. The helper reads the code files, finds the functions and classes, and ranks them by how important they seem. It sends back a short map of the project, and the AI uses that map to answer you or to pick the right files to work on.

What you can do with it

  • Get a ranked list of the most important files in a project
  • See function and class names with the line numbers where they live
  • Find which files are connected to each other through shared code
  • Focus the map on files you are currently working on
  • Limit the map to fit inside your AI's memory budget
  • Skip files that do not seem important
  • Cache results so later runs are faster

Try asking your AI

  • “Map this project and tell me which files matter most.”
  • “I am working on repomap_class.py. Show me the map around that file.”
  • “Which functions in this project are used the most?”
  • “Give me a short map of the src folder, under 2000 tokens.”

What it gives back to you

You get back a text map in the chat. It lists file names, a rank value for each, and the important lines inside them, like function and class definitions. It looks a bit like a table of contents for the code. Your AI can then read from that map or use it to decide what to open next.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The RepoMap files downloaded from the project page
  • The Python packages listed in requirements.txt installed
  • An AI tool that can talk to MCP servers, like Cline or Roo

Good to know

It reads the code files in the project folder you point it at, so avoid pointing it at folders with private or secret files you do not want an AI to see.

Install it with your AI

Add RepoMap MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check RepoMap MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
